Sumitra Singam
Writer. Trauma Therapist
Hi, I’m Sumitra.
I write small, and I run workshops on writing trauma safely.
About Me
Bio
I am a Malaysian-Indian-Australian writer and psychiatrist/trauma therapist. I live in Naarm/Melbourne on the unceded lands of the Wurrundjeri people. I pay my respects to their elders past, present and emerging.
Writing
I write small - micro and flash fiction, and am widely published. I have been selected for a number of ‘best of’ anthologies, and made Best MIcrofictions 2024, and the Wigleaf Longlist 2024. My writing has themes of family, trauma, loss and food. Here’s a pic of me eating durian.
Workshops
I run zoom workshops to teach people how to stay regulated while writing tough stuff.

Workshops
I run a two-hour zoom workshop covering the basics of trauma neurobiology, including somatic techniques to stay regulated while writing tough stuff.
What others say:
"This is a workshop unlike any other I’ve experienced. Part therapy session, part scientific exploration, part creative harbour, Sumitra will have you thinking about yourself and your characters in a completely different light, considering how we behave in moments of trauma and how those moments of trauma ripple through our lives. If you want to learn how to write about your traumas, or if you just want to develop your understanding of character, this workshop is a must." - Matt Kendrick, writer, teacher, editor (www.mattkendrick.co.uk)
“If you can, take this workshop!! So informative and empathetic and empowering! (Sumitra) is a wonderful workshop leader.” Fiona McKay, author of The Top Road and Drawn and Quartered.
NEXT DATES:
SATURDAY 12 OCTOBER 2024 9AM BST/7PM MELBOURNE
SATURDAY 19 OCTOBER 2024 3PM EST/8PM BST
